NeuroBytes: Prescription of Rescue Medications for Seizures in Adults

NeuroBytes: Prescription of Rescue Medications for Seizures in Adults

Course Description

Until recently, rescue medications for seizure emergencies in epilepsy patients were limited to rectal and oral formulations and awareness of their use was limited. However, new intranasal formulations of benzodiazepines, as well as increasing recognition of seizure clusters, has changed our practice. Seizure clusters are known to be a driver of patient morbidity and patient dissatisfaction. In this video, we will discuss the currently available rescue medications and their use in clinical practice in order to help all neurologists feel comfortable integrating their use into the care of all patients with epilepsy.

Learning Objectives

As a result of this program the learner will be able to:
  • Understand the importance of rescue medications in the care of epilepsy patients.
  • Consider which patients qualify for rescue medications and what is available to prescribe
