NeuroBytes: Acute Symptomatic Seizures

NeuroBytes: Acute Symptomatic Seizures

Course Description

With the expanding use of inpatient continuous EEG, more non-convulsive seizures and other highly epileptiform patterns are being uncovered. In the acute phase, patients are appropriately treated with antiseizure medications  (ASMs), but patients often remain on medications for years; possibly unnecessarily and with risk of adverse effects, long-term toxicity, and drug interactions. This course will explore factors which place patients in higher or lower risk strata for long-term epilepsy and thereby help guide management decisions for continuation versus weaning of ASMs.

Learning Objectives

As a result of this program the learner will be able to:
  • Define acute symptomatic seizures
  • Compare the risk of epilepsy between unprovoked and acute symptomatic seizures
  • Recognize features which increase the risk of epilepsy following acute symptomatic seizures
  • Describe a reasonable approach to anti-seizure medication discontinuation in the post-acute period
