NeuroBytes: Management of Increased Intracranial Pressure

NeuroBytes: Management of increased intracranial pressure

Course Description

There are four types of cerebral edema: vasogenic, cytotoxic, hydrostatic, and osmotic. Oftentimes, there are multiple forms of cerebral edema that may contribute to elevated intracranial pressure (ICP). Due to intracranial compliance, invasive ICP monitoring may be insensitive to underlying cerebral edema before it progresses to severe levels. Management of elevated intracranial pressures should involve a tiered approach, focusing on preventative measures for any patient at risk for high ICP and culminating in more invasive interventions, such as surgical decompression.

Learning Objectives

As a result of this program the learner will be able to:
  • Describe clinical features of elevated intracranial pressures and Understand how to implement a tiered approach to treatment for elevated ICP.
