NeuroBytes: When Should EMG and NCS Be Ordered?

NeuroBytes: When Should Electromyography and Nerve Conduction Testing Be Ordered?

Course Description

An electrodiagnostic evaluation consists of nerve conduction studies (NCS) and needle electromyography (EMG). Together, these studies are used to evaluate the severity and chronicity of lesions that affect the motor and sensory neurons, roots, plexus, nerve, neuromuscular junction, and muscle. When used appropriately, an electrodiagnostic evaluation may inform management decisions about neuromuscular diseases, but inappropriate electrodiagnostic testing can result in a significant burden to healthcare and unnecessary discomfort to the patient. We aim in this video to provide a guided approach to consider when thinking about ordering electrodiagnostic testing.

Learning Objectives

As a result of this program the learner will be able to:
  • Differentiate clinical scenarios that are more likely to benefit from electrodiagnostic testing.
